A clear-span metal shop has no interior columns — rigid frames carry the entire roof from wall to wall, leaving a completely open floor. A multi-span shop uses one or more rows of interior columns to support the roof, which divides the floor but allows lighter framing across very wide buildings. Choose clear-span when you need unobstructed space for vehicles, equipment, or flexible layouts; consider multi-span for very wide buildings where interior columns won’t get in the way.

What Is a Clear-Span Metal Shop?
A clear-span building uses rigid steel frames that span the full width of the building, supported only at the side walls. With no columns in the middle, every square foot of floor is usable. Toro’s clear-span framing reaches widths of up to 200 feet.
Why Shop Owners Choose Clear-Span
- Complete layout freedom: Arrange equipment, benches, bays, and storage however works best, and change it later.
- Room for large equipment: Vehicles, lifts, and machinery can move freely with nothing to navigate around.
- Versatility: The same open space works for storage, warehousing, manufacturing, retail, or service bays.
- Adaptable over time: An open floor is easy to repurpose if your business changes.
- Easier to keep clean and organized: No columns creating awkward corners and dead space.
What Is a Multi-Span Metal Shop?
A multi-span building adds interior columns that support the roof framing partway across the building, dividing the width into two or more spans. Because each rafter spans a shorter distance, the framing can be lighter.
Benefits of Multi-Span
- Economy at very wide widths: For buildings wider than roughly 100 feet, interior columns can meaningfully reduce the amount of steel needed, lowering cost.
- Very large footprints: Multi-span framing makes extremely wide buildings practical.
- Natural divisions: Column lines can work well where you’d divide the space anyway — separating storage from work areas, or aisles in a warehouse.
- Quick construction: Like clear-span buildings, multi-span buildings are prefabricated and go up quickly.
- Energy efficiency: Both styles can be fully insulated to control heating and cooling costs.
Clear-Span vs. Multi-Span at a Glance
| Factor | Clear-Span | Multi-Span |
|---|---|---|
| Interior columns | None | One or more rows |
| Floor flexibility | Complete | Must plan around columns |
| Best for | Shops, hangars, arenas, service bays | Very wide warehouses and storage |
| Cost at typical shop widths | Efficient | Usually not needed |
| Cost at very wide widths | Heavier framing | Often more economical |

What About Strength?
Both systems are equally capable when properly designed. Every Toro building — clear-span or multi-span — is engineered by our in-house team for the snow, wind, and seismic loads at its exact address, so neither is inherently weaker in bad weather. The choice comes down to how you’ll use the floor and how wide the building needs to be.

Which Is Right for Your Shop?
For most metal shops — garages, auto shops, fabrication shops, and workshops — clear-span is the natural choice, because open floor space is exactly what the work needs and typical shop widths are well within clear-span range. If you’re planning an unusually wide building and can live with columns, such as a large warehouse or storage facility, multi-span may save money. Tell your Building Specialist how you’ll use the space, and they can help you compare both.
What Does a Steel Shop Cost?
Toro’s steel building kits start at $19 to $26 per square foot for the shell. Where your building lands in that range depends mainly on your site’s snow, wind, and seismic requirements, along with width, framing system, and accessories.
