All the major suppliers of steel building products in Canada are required to work with Professional Engineers, and the engineers must be licensed.
To become a Professional Engineer (PE), one must complete a four year college degree from a recognized engineering institution, then work under a Professional Engineer for a minimum of four years, sit and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and the Principles of Engineering (PE) examinations, and finally earn a licence from the Canadian Licensure Board. By the time they are Licensed PEs, these people are usually very highly specialized in their areas. Combining this with high levels of ethics and quality assurance (QA), they are capable of delivering at exceptional standards while keeping the public safe and healthy.
There are two main differences between an ordinary engineer and a licensed PE.
- Professional Engineers shoulder the responsibility for not only what they do, but also how what they do affects the lives of people in that community.
- ONLY PEs can prepare, sign, seal, and submit an engineering plan to a public body for approval, or for seal engineering for public or private clients.
Canadian suppliers are guided by CAN/CSA A660 Standards
The CSA-A660 standards were developed to assist code enforcement officials in reviewing buildings’ quality and particularly steel buildings. The Standard was developed at the request of the Canadian Steel Building System (SBS) Manufacturers. SBS manufacturer is usually secluded from the construction site and the buildings are often sold through contractors or a local builder. If code enforcement officials wish to ascertain the structural adequacy of a building, they can now simply call on the A660 Standard and an accompanying certification program.
The CAN/CSA A660 Standard requires that a manufacturer’s facilities, quality assurance systems, and staff be capable of consistently delivering quality steel building products. To ensure that this is taken seriously, the A660 Standard demands that manufacturers of steel products be certified by a certification agency e.g. The Canadian Welding Bureau. The manufacturer must also provide Certificates of Design and Manufacturing Conformance for each building and specific location – these certificates must be signed and sealed by a licensed PE. The certificates usually list key design criteria which are what are reviewed by the CAN/CSA A660 code enforcement officials, the Engineer of Record, as well as the owner of the building.
