About this video: how to build a cold-formed steel building in 5 steps

In this 1:32 video, Toro shows how to build a cold-formed steel building in five steps: prepare the foundation, install the columns, build the main frame, add bracing and support, then install the panels and finish. Each step has an on-screen card explaining what happens, over footage of a cold-formed building going up beside a home.

Toro's cold-formed steel buildings, including the M-Model, are made by Toro and engineered for bolt-together assembly. They suit garages, workshops and storage buildings.

  • Foundation and anchor bolts. A level concrete slab with properly placed anchor bolts.
  • Columns, rafters and bracing. The columns go up, rafters form the frame, and braces, purlins and girts tie it together.
  • Panels to finish. Roof and wall panels complete the building.

The 5 steps in this video

How a Toro cold-formed steel building goes together, from the slab to the panels.

Steps 1 to 3

Foundation, columns, main frame

Start with a level concrete slab and properly placed anchor bolts. Set the vertical columns and secure them to the base, then attach the rafters to the columns to form the shape of the building.

Steps 4 and 5

Bracing, panels and finish

Install braces, purlins and girts to strengthen and connect the frame, then add the roof and wall panels to complete the building.

Questions about building a cold-formed steel building

Still unsure? Price your building and a building specialist will walk you through it.

What are the five steps to build a cold-formed steel building?

Prepare the foundation, install the columns, build the main frame, add bracing and support, then install the panels and finish.

What foundation does a cold-formed building need?

The video starts with a level concrete slab and properly placed anchor bolts. Toro provides the structural reactions for every building, so a local contractor can build the foundation to spec.

Are anchor bolts included?

Yes. Anchor bolts are included with every cold-formed building.

What are purlins and girts?

Purlins run along the roof and girts along the walls. Together with the braces, they strengthen and connect the frame and carry the roof and wall panels.

Can I put up a cold-formed building myself?

Yes. Toro doesn't install buildings: every kit is engineered for bolt-together assembly by the customer or a local contractor.

How much does a cold-formed steel building cost?

Toro steel building kits start at $19 USD per sq ft in the U.S. and $26 CAD per sq ft in Canada. Your site's loads and codes, along with size, framing system, openings and options, have a big impact on the final price, so reach out for pricing on your specific building.
