About this video: a custom steel dog kennel and training facility review

In this 2:20 video, Steven Oesi of Howler’s Dog Sport reviews the custom steel dog kennel and training facility Toro supplied for their daycare, training and boarding business in Central West Ontario. He explains how a kit build kept costs manageable, how the building was engineered for snow and high winds, why it’s more hygienic than a conventional kennel, and why they’re expanding with Toro.

The kennel is a Toro red iron steel building, the same kind Toro supplies for small business shops and commercial buildings. Toro doesn’t install buildings: every kit is engineered for bolt-together assembly, and Howler’s put theirs up with help from a few trades.

  • Manageable costs. A kit build that was fairly easy to put up helped them manage costs more efficiently.
  • Engineered for dogs and people. The engineer designed for Central West Ontario snow loads and high winds.
  • Easy to keep clean. Steel let them clean to a level where they won’t have biological issues.

Introduction: Howler’s Dog Sport

0:15 My name is Steven Oesi, and we own and run Howler’s Dog Sport. We offer daycare, training and boarding.

A kit build with manageable costs

0:23 The Toro building offered us an opportunity to have a kit build, which allowed us to manage our costs more efficiently, because it was fairly easy to construct. With the help of a few trades, we were able to construct it properly and quickly.

Snow and high winds in Central West Ontario

0:57 The environmental concerns that we have at Howler’s are snow loads and high winds, being in Central West Ontario. These were considerations that the engineer had to take into account, and provide us with solutions that were safe for humans and for dogs.

A more hygienic building

1:18 It offered us a more hygienic approach over a conventional building. It allowed us to ensure that we could clean the building to a level that we wouldn’t have any kind of biological issues.

Built to last

1:46 What I’m really saying is this building will be here in 50 years. A conventional building used as a kennel would have to be either renovated or torn down after 15 or 20 years.

Approachable team and a 1,500 sq ft expansion

1:54 The salesperson was approachable, the engineers were approachable, and if we were struggling with something, they were happy to walk us through it.

2:01 We’re undergoing a 1,500 square foot expansion right now, and we’re doing it with a Toro building, so I think that says what our level of happiness is with the building.

Transcript lightly edited for readability. Music-only sections are left out.

Built for a kennel

Engineering, hygiene and durability

The building was engineered for Central West Ontario snow loads and high winds, with solutions safe for both people and dogs. Steel lets Howler’s clean it thoroughly, and Steven expects it to last 50 years, compared with 15 to 20 for a conventional kennel building.

“This building will be here in 50 years.”

“We’re undergoing a 1,500 square foot expansion right now, and we’re doing it with a Toro building.”

Questions about steel dog kennel buildings

Still unsure? Price your building and a building specialist will walk you through it.

Is a steel building a good choice for a dog kennel?

Steven says steel gave Howler’s a more hygienic building than a conventional one, which they can clean to a level where they won’t have biological issues. He also expects it to last 50 years, compared with 15 to 20 for a conventional kennel building.

Can a kennel building handle snow and high winds?

Yes. Every Toro building is engineered for the snow, wind and seismic loads at its site. For Howler’s in Central West Ontario, the engineer designed for snow loads and high winds, with solutions safe for people and dogs.

Can I insulate a steel kennel building?

Yes. Insulation is an optional add-on, so you can include it for year-round comfort for the dogs and staff.

Can I expand my kennel building later?

Yes. Howler’s is adding a 1,500 sq ft expansion with Toro. Your building specialist can plan an addition engineered for your site, just like the original building.

Does Toro install the building?

No. Toro doesn’t install buildings. Every kit is engineered for bolt-together assembly by the customer or a local contractor, and Howler’s put theirs up with help from a few trades.

How much does a steel kennel building cost?

Toro steel building kits start at $19 USD per sq ft in the U.S. and $26 CAD per sq ft in Canada. Your site’s loads and codes, along with size, framing system, openings and options, have a big impact on the final price, so reach out for pricing on your specific building.
