About this video: a 150x300x27 industrial steel warehouse review with crane capacity

In this 3:14 video, Rob Giordano, president of Technical Steel Corp, reviews the 150x300x27 Toro industrial steel building he built for his structural steel business. He needed three cranes on each track on a tight timeline, and explains how Toro engineered the building for lateral and wind loads, rated the center bay for 30-ton cranes, and delivered on time and in full during the pandemic.

His warehouse is one of Toro’s large industrial warehouses, engineered in-house by Toro’s engineering team. See more manufacturing facilities.

Three cranes on each track

0:01 I needed three cranes on each track, and nobody could actually handle that kind of in the speed that I needed it.

Meet Technical Steel Corp

0:25 My name is Rob Giordano. I am the president of Technical Steel Corp, the new corporation that I’ve created. It’s a structural steel and miscellaneous metals business. I needed a building for it that can host cranes, so I had orders coming in that I needed building. Found Toro and I started talking to the team, and they made my life a lot easier dealing with them.

Tight timelines and simple drawings

0:43 They helped me stick to my timelines. I had very tight timelines to get the building up, and the building went up really, really fast. Experience was great. I submitted what I wanted and what I needed, and we went back and forth with drawings. There’s approval stages. The Toro drawings are very simple. They break down each component. Anybody can build it themselves; it’s very, very simple. The footings, the foundation, everything that they give you is very detailed and easy to put up.

Engineered for 30-ton cranes

1:10 The first thing was the structural engineering, and we went back and forth about lateral loads, wind loads, footings, foundations. We had to make sure that we put hairpin details in the footings, so that way for the lateral loads, they worked with us and we were able to achieve exactly what I needed for now and for the future. The center bay is rated for 30 tons. We don’t need it now, but thinking long-term in the next 5 years, I’ll need it.

On time during the pandemic, with fast answers

1:34 Unfortunately, this happened during the pandemic, so I figured that it was going to take an extremely long time to produce it and get it delivered. This was the only thing that was on time and in full delivered. Everything else was delayed, and it was a disaster.

1:48 They’re very professional. When I call them, they always answer their phone. If I have questions, I’ll send them an email; I get a response within 24 hours. Fantastic.

Easy to customize

1:56 The Toro buildings are very easy to customize. Basically, you tell them what your length and width for each bay is, and then they’ll add a structural member in between just to make it work. So as long as you’re under your snow loads and your wind loads, they can make it work.

Durable and low maintenance

2:09 So I decided to go with Toro Building because of the longevity. I believe that it’s a very simple building; it’s easy to put up. The siding looks like it’s very durable; it’s aluminum. Aluminum doesn’t rust, it’s powder-coated painted, the steel inside is fantastic. So I bought it for that reason.

2:24 Yeah, so there’s pretty much no maintenance. I’m outside, so it’s just a matter of power washing the dirt off of it. It’s fantastic, and it’s insulated on the inside and closed off, so zero maintenance on the building.

On time, on budget, and a showpiece

2:35 The speed in which we built the building was I was able to hit the market at the right time. So for me, that was the number one thing: trying to get this building up and running and under budget. Very satisfied with the quality. Everybody that walks in here, it’s a showpiece for my structural steel division. So everybody that walks in here asks me exactly where did I get it. Yeah, I just send them over to Toro.

2:55 On the weekends, I’ll take my kids here. I have a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old, and they’ve been here for the whole process, so I’m super proud of it. I let them drive the cranes, I let them stand in this… You look at it, how can you not be proud of this building? It’s fantastic.

Engineered for cranes

Lateral loads, wind loads, 30 tons

Toro’s engineers worked through lateral loads, wind loads, footings and foundations with him, including hairpin details in the footings. The center bay is rated for 30-ton cranes, planned for the growth he expects in the next five years.

Questions about industrial steel buildings with cranes

Still unsure? Price your building and a building specialist will walk you through it.

Can a steel building be designed for overhead cranes?

Yes. Rob’s 150x300x27 warehouse runs three cranes on each track, and its center bay is rated for 30 tons. Share your crane loads early so they can be engineered into the building.

How big is this warehouse?

It’s 150 ft wide, 300 ft long and 27 ft high, or 45,000 sq ft.

Can Toro plan a building for future growth?

Yes. Rob had the center bay rated for 30-ton cranes, which he doesn’t need yet but expects to within five years.

Does Toro provide foundation details?

Yes. Toro provides the structural reactions and foundation details for every building, and Rob’s drawings included hairpin details in the footings for lateral loads. A local contractor builds the foundation to spec.

Can I customize the bay sizes?

Yes. Rob says you tell Toro the length and width you want for each bay, and they engineer the structure to suit, within your site’s snow and wind loads.

How much does an industrial steel building cost?

Toro steel building kits start at $19 USD per sq ft in the U.S. and $26 CAD per sq ft in Canada. Your site’s loads and codes, along with size, framing system, openings and options, have a big impact on the final price, so reach out for pricing on your specific building.
