Every now and then we receive a customer story that captures what it’s really like to take on a prefab DIY steel building project. This one came from Jim M. in Missouri, who built a 30′ x 40′ steel building for equipment storage with a couple of friends — and wrote about it with more humour than most of us could manage. Here it is, in his words.

In Jim’s Words

«Hi! I’m Jim. I don’t usually write reviews. I’m not one to post about a sandwich unless it changed my life. But after finishing my building project with Toro Steel, I felt like I owed it to them and maybe the next guy in my boots — maybe someone out there who’s been putting off the decision like I did.

I’m not a contractor. I’m just a regular guy with too many tools, not enough covered storage, and a lawn tractor that’s been parked under a tarp like it’s in witness protection. I’d been thinking about putting up a proper building for years — but dreaming about it doesn’t keep your gear dry.

I found Toro Steel Buildings during one of my late-night internet rabbit holes — you know, where you start off checking the weather and end up comparing building kits until 2 a.m. What hooked me was seeing the kinds of projects other people were doing — barns, shops, garages — it gave me the ‘hey, I could actually do this’ feeling.

So, I reached out for a quote. To my surprise, I got a call from an actual human being within a day. She asked smart questions — where I’m located, what I’m using the building for, when I’m planning to build, wind and snow loads in my area. You could tell they weren’t just selling a product — they were engineering a custom solution. The building would be tailored to my local conditions and codes, and because it was a prefab DIY steel building, I could handle it myself with some backup from a couple of buddies and a fully stocked cooler.

Delivery was right on time. Everything labelled, everything there. It was like building a giant metal model kit. I won’t pretend it was all smooth sailing — there were definitely a few moments, like when my buddy Dave dropped a wrench from the roof and it put a new dent in my truck bed. But overall, it was manageable. Toro’s instructions were clear, and their online videos helped fill in any gaps.

So why did I choose steel over wood? Simple. I was tired of dealing with sagging wood, rot, and raccoons turning my shed into an Airbnb. This building is solid. It doesn’t care about the weather. It just stands there and gets the job done. And it looks great on my property.

I’ve lined the walls with shelves, hung up my tools, and I can park the mower inside without contorting myself. Financially, it was one of the best choices I’ve made. Doing it myself saved me a chunk of change, and I didn’t have to cut corners to stay on budget.

What really stood out was how Toro treated me. Every time I had a question — and trust me, I had a few — they were quick to respond and happy to help. No runaround. Just straight answers.

I ended up using my building as an equipment shed, but it’s become more than that. It’s my go-to space now. There’s room to work on projects without tripping over a shovel, and I even find myself just standing in there sometimes, appreciating how clean and solid it feels. It’s a great feeling to build something with your own two hands and see it pay off every day.

So why write this now? Because I know how easy it is to keep saying ‘one of these days.’ Well, I finally did it. I built the thing. And if you’re on the fence about getting a prefab DIY steel building, take it from me — it’s worth it. No gimmicks. No regrets.»

— Jim M., Missouri

What Jim’s Story Shows About DIY Steel Buildings

  • Engineered for your site: Jim’s building was designed for Missouri’s specific wind and snow loads before it was manufactured.
  • Realistic for non-contractors: Labelled, pre-punched components and clear instructions make assembly manageable with a few helpers.
  • Real savings: Assembling it himself kept costs down without compromising quality.
  • More than storage: A well-organized steel building quickly becomes a workshop and hobby space too.

Thinking About Your Own DIY Steel Building?

Toro’s prefab DIY steel building kits come with everything you need to assemble the structure — whether it’s for storage, a workshop, or a garage. Kits start at $19 to $26 per square foot for the shell, with the final price depending mainly on your site’s snow, wind, and seismic requirements. If you’d prefer a curved Quonset-style building, arch-style kits are manufactured by our sister company Future Buildings and sold through Toro.

Permits, Codes & Engineering

Structural design follows the ASCE 7 standard from the American Society of Civil Engineers, referenced by the International Code Council‘s International Building Code. Toro’s in-house engineering team calculates every building’s loads for its specific address before it ships.
